Our VISION (long term ongoing)
To make public transport the choice mode of transport, we are enhancing our public transport system to make it more attractive to Penangite and a viable alternative to the car. By strengthening the integration of our public transport system, commuters should be able to benefit from:

Seamless and convenient transfers
Easily accessible services
Reliable and comfortable travel journeys
Competitive journey time relative to cars
Affordable fares

Our MISSION for 2019
1) To increase usage of Rapid Pg from 3% to 5%
2) To shorten journey time by introducing following doable improvements
2,1) clear up bus stops with strong enforcement, mark bus stops as yellow boxes & tow away signs.
2.2) reduce driver ticketing
2.3) priority for buses to exit bus stops
2.4) priority for buses at traffic lights
3) Safety, conveniences & comfort of bus users
3.1) design standards for bus stops
3.2) implement Bus information System with monitors
3.3) share BIS on mobile apps for better planning of journeys
4) Review, Audit and Feedback
4.1) Form bus user groups according to arterial routes namely 10x, 20x, 30x, 40x to get feedback and audit improvements.
4.2) Identify special groups such as schools, factories, airport, OKU, hospitals, etc



Carbon Foot Print, car vs motorbike vs bus vs bicycle

Hi everyone,
Just to share a few points based on my experience.

I have to travel about 16km from my house to my office.

Case 1: If I am using a car, it will take me about 60-75mins (during peak hours) to reach the destination.
That is roughly about 4.096 kg of Carbons (due to fuel consumption during travelling and Idling), and will amount to approximately 2.4576 tonnes of Carbons in a year. It will cost me roughly about RM6,000 per year.

Case 2: If I am using a Motorcycle, I will only need about 15-20mins to reach the destination. That is roughly about 0.944 kg of Carbons and will amount to approximately 0.5664 ton of Carbons in a year. It will cost me roughly about RM1,000 per year.

Case 3: If I am using the Public Transportation (bus), I will have to travel around 19.5km (including 4.3km of walking and transitting between 2 busses), and it will take me about 2.5 hours (including 30mins of walking). That is roughly about 1.3528 kg of Carbons and will amount to approximately 0.8117 ton of Carbons in a year. It will cost me roughly about RM1,800 per year.

Case 4: If I am cycling, it will take me about 45-60mins to reach the destination, with zero emission. It will cost me roughly about RM200 per year.

What can be deduced from above?

Reduce Bus Stopping Time & user friendly

Summarise from this morning’s chat

1) introduce electronic ticketing. Most common is Touch and Go. Need zero top up fee and allow low minimum top up for low cash flow users.

2) promote culture of queuing

3) strict enforcement of no stopping at bus stops. Draw up yellow boxes 100 m around bus stops where possible.

4) draw up Penang standards for bus stops, e.g. design, dimensions, facilities, information, floor painting to encourage queuing, sponsorship rules, BIS, OKU features, seats, insulation, protection from rain & shine, etc

5) use video monitors in bus to educate users on ticketing, queuing, appreciation for user in taking action to make Penang cleaner, greener & clearer (reduce congestion)

6) reduce walking time to bus stops such as clear walkway, covered drains


BRT, Dedicated Bus Lanes, Improve Infra

Below is the summary of some discussion BRT
1) which route to start?
1.1) Long route like 101 Telok Bahang- Jetty where time saving & load factor can be measured for its effectiveness
1.2) of short dense route such as Relau- Sunshine- BJ- FTZ-Batu Maung where conversion from car to bus can help to reduce congestion

2) How to specify BRT Penang style?
2.1) equivalent to Bogota or Brisbane
2.2) dedicated lanes all the way, or bus only near junctions
2.3) smart traffic lights

3) Implementation time frame
timeframe about 1-3 years depending on specification in (2)Β  we may need to form another group for BRT, as this group is focusing on improvement to Rapid Pg that can be implemented within 2019.

4) Most agreed that BRT should start with using Rapid buses on arterial routes and small and frequent feeder buses

Bus Information System (BIS)

CK: I don’t blame rapid Penang nor prasarana. Places where open data feed is available often the bus is owned by municipal government, and operators are consigned to them in corridor franchise

What is LG CNS? Β The vendor who got the contract to deliver Rapid Penang’s BIS, schedule to operate end of 2018, maintain by Rapid Penang.

SC: Does not work with our RapidPg moovit. believe me, I have tried. I thinks it gives the time the bus leaves the starting point (need live GPS location to compensate for delays during journey)

Question by ST, does Rapid Pg plan to share buses’ GPS location to third party like Google Maps, Mapme, Waze, etc . Allow smartphone user to check buses’ ETA for immediate planning, also to inform potential bus users the frequency & route network of Rapid Pg service.
